SALISBURY
LIONS HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CLASSIC

WICOMICO YOUTH AND CIVIC CENTER
The Annual Holiday Classic has been held since 1989.
 |
Proceeds from the last
fifteen tournaments
have enabled the Salisbury Lions Club to donate over $150,000 to the athletic
departments of the participating schools. With the financial assistance of various
sponsors, the tournament has been very successful each year. This year's
attendance exceeded 3000 . The first year the Salisbury
Lions Club donated the wood basketball court on which all games are now played at the
Civic Center. |
The idea of a tournament was conceived in an effort to provide
an activity for high school students and their families during the Christmas holiday
break. It has developed into a means to supplement the budgets of the school athletic
departments at a time when the school spending for these endeavors have been reduced.
Further, it has provided our communities a way to use one of the Eastern Shore's finest
facilities for the youth of our communities, by promoting the natural rivalry which exists
among the Delmarva High Schools in a friendly, competitive setting. At no other time do
the school teams from the participating conferences play against each other.
|
The
tournament is made feasible by the donations of several sponsors. Lions
club members sell advertisements in the Tournament's Program to help
raise the money necessary to fund the tournament. Expenses include
donation to the schools, food provided to each team after its game, payroll
for the basketball officials , printing costs for posters and programs, and
advertising costs for the promotion of the event. Congratulations to
Chairman Bruzz Truitt and Lions Members who contribute several hundred hours
in planning and organization and over 140 hours at the Civic Center to make
the event successful. |
